Spanish numbers from 20 to 100: Spanish vs. Italian vs. French

In the previous post you have learned that Spanish numbers from 20 to 100 are often very similar to numbers in Italian (with frequent significant differences in pronunciation), but they differ from French numbers also in the very core logic in some cases (Spanish vs. French numbers from 70 to 99). You can read the first part here: Learning Basic Numbers in Spanish: From 20 to 100.

Spanish numbers from 10 to 100: full tens recap

As a quick recap, the full tens from 10 to 100 in Spanish are: 10 diez – 20 veinte – 30 treinta – 40 cuarenta – 50 cincuenta – 60 sesenta – 70 setenta – 80 ochenta – 90 noventa – 100 ciento.

Spanish numbers from 20 to 100: filling the gaps

Once you know the full tens in Spanish, it is easy to understand and say all the other numbers. Spanish numbers from 20 to 100 always follow the same logic, with just a small modification in the 20′s.

Spanish cardinal numbers from 20 to 29

The numbers from 21 to 29 are always written as one word. The number always starts with veinti- (caution – not veinte) and then you simply add the basic 1-10 number. Just beware of accents from time to time. All Spanish numbers from 20 to 29 follow:

  • veinte = 20 (twenty)
  • veintiuno = 21 (twenty-one)
  • veintidós = 22 (twenty-two)
  • veintitrés = 23 (twenty-three)
  • veinticuatro = 24 (twenty-four)
  • veinticinco = 25 (twenty-five)
  • veintiséis = 26 (twenty-six)
  • veintisiete = 27 (twenty-seven)
  • veintiocho = 28 (twenty-eight)
  • veintinueve = 29 (twenty-nine)

Spanish cardinal numbers from 31 to 99

From 31 on the numbers in Spanish are written in parts as separate words: for example 31 is treinta y uno (literally “thirty and one”). There is nothing new to learn with these numbers, as you simply put together the numbers you already know and connect them with y (which means and in Spanish). A few more examples of Spanish numbers from 31 to 99 follow:

  • treinta y dos = 32 (thirty-two)
  • treinta y tres = 33 (thirty-three)
  • treinta y cuatro = 34 (thirty-four)
  • treinta y cinco = 35 (thirty-five)
  • cuarenta y uno = 41 (forty-one)
  • cuarenta y dos = 42 (forty-two)
  • cuarenta y tres = 43 (forty-three)
